Online Nursing Degrees

In addition to the University graduate admission requirements, the School of Nursing bases decisions for regular admission on a holistic review of credentials in which the following criteria are used to assess the potential success of each applicant:

• An earned Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an NLNAC, ACEN, or CCNE accredited nursing program with a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale OR a 3.0 (GPA) on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 hours of coursework on the BSN.
• Evidence of a completed undergraduate statistics course with a grade of “C” or better.
• A current unencumbered Registered Nurse license to practice nursing in a state or territory of the United States.
• A curriculum vitae (CV) that includes: work history, educational background, community service involvement with dates, national certification entity, and professional organization memberships.
• Reflect on your career goals and write a statement that includes a written narrative of the following:
  
  • What aspects of your current or previous experience as a registered nurse have influenced your decision to pursue a Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)?
  • Describe the type of healthcare setting in which you envision practicing as an FNP.
  • What unique role and contribution do you plan to bring to your patients as a family nurse practitioner?
  • Given your existing responsibilities, what strategies will you employ to manage your time and commitments effectively to ensure success in graduate school and reach your academic and career aspirations?
  • Your answers will serve as an example of your critical thinking and writing skills. Citations and references are not required. Submission should be typed and between 150-200 words.

Admission to the FNP program is competitive and selective. Applicants are reviewed by the School of Nursing Graduate Admissions Committee. Please note, students who are not eligible to register in the college or university last attended, for academic or disciplinary reasons, will not be admitted to the FNP program.

Time to completion varies by student, depending on individual progress and credits transferred, if applicable. Most certificate programs can be completed in two semesters depending on requirements. Undergraduate degree programs typically take 4 years, although transfer credits can reduce the time to completion. The length of graduate degree programs is anywhere from 12–24 months depending on program requirements and transfer credits.

Yes. Faculty at the University of West Florida are experienced professionals who deliver an online education with the same rigor and benefits of an on-campus program. You will work with course management systems that enhance learning material with multimedia. You will also have the chance to interact one-on-one with classmates and instructors. Depending on the program and course, you will learn in real-time through live lectures and class sessions. Other requirements can be completed on your schedule.

Members of the U.S. military, plus their families, are eligible for many military discounts, including free tuition through the Yellow Ribbon Program and tuition waivers. Active-duty military members receive an out-of-state tuition waiver. Residents of Alabama are eligible for Alabama Differential Tuition, a reduced out-of-state tuition rate. You could also enroll in a payment plan or secure a short-term loan.
