The University of West Florida’s fully online Database Systems Certificate is customized to provide you with the technical knowledge you need to secure jobs in this competitive field. This program includes coursework in database design, management and administration. You will also learn the basics of computer programming in widely-used programming languages, along with principles of data mining and information security. Even online, you will receive one-on-one attention from expert professors.
Your Database Systems Certificate could impart the qualifications to pursue new career opportunities. The certificate could also allow professionals to advance their careers and be more effective in their current positions.
This certificate is only available to non-degree seeking students or degree-seeking UWF computer science students.

This certificate requires completion of the following courses within five years from the receipt of the application. All courses must be completed with a grade of C- or higher.

Programming Using Visual Basic
An introductory course in programming for non-majors. Incorporates the basic concepts of programming, programming logic and problem solving, as well as the design features of a visual, event driven language. Students will use a visual interface to program useful applications. Prerequisite: CGS 2570

Programming Using Java
Introduction to algorithms and object-oriented programming. Topics include control constructs, looping constructs, parameter passing, and arrays. Emphasizes developing fundamental programming skills and software engineering principles in the context of an object-oriented language to solve complex problems in a secure and robust manner.

Programming Using C++
Introduction to computers and algorithms. Programming in a high level language. Topics include structured programming techniques, procedural and data abstraction. Students will learn the fundamentals of developing coherent, expressive programs.

Introduction to database systems and database management system architectures. Various database models are discussed with an emphasis on the relational model and relational database design. Case applications using fourth-generation languages, such as SQL, are included. Offered concurrently with COP 5725; graduate students will be assigned additional work.

Data Mining
Exposes students to data mining concepts and techniques and different data mining software. Covers data pre-processing and cleaning, concept hierarchy generation, attribute relevance analysis, association rule mining, classification algorithms, and cluster analysis. Offered concurrently with CAP 5771; graduate students will be assigned additional work. Prerequisite: COP 4710

Introduction to Database Security
The Database Security course follows guidelines set forth by the National Security Agency/Department of Homeland Security Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance and Cyber Defense. This course is considered a core knowledge unit for institutions to be considered a Center of Academic Excellence. Database Security is designed to teach students how database systems are used, managed, and issues associated with protecting the associated data assets. This undergraduate course is a requirement for the B.S. in Cybersecurity and will be an elective for all other undergraduate Computer Science programs. Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission into the University of West Florida’s online Database Systems Certificate program, you must be admitted into the University as an undergraduate non-degree seeking student.
How to Apply
Once accepted as an undergraduate non-degree seeking student, students should contact the College of Science and Engineering Advising Center and speak to an advisor about course availability and scheduling, and to complete the online Undergraduate Certificate Declaration Form on MyUWF.

Tuition waivers cover up to 75 percent of the non-resident portion of your tuition and are available to non-Florida residents (including international students) admitted to online programs and registered for online courses in active pursuit of that degree or certificate. You must pay all other assessed tuition and fees.
Time to completion varies by student, depending on individual progress. Fees are charged per semester unless otherwise noted. This program takes up to three semesters to complete, depending on course availability.

Alabama Differential Out-of-State Tuition
Residents of Alabama are eligible for Alabama Differential Tuition, a reduced out-of-state tuition rate.
